TDM is a boot mode unique to Macs which bypasses the Operating System and enables its drives to behave as Thunderbolt or FireWire external mass storage device. With that done, the Mac in Target mode can be safely attached and imaged.
Windows would then have produced an error message and halted. The Mac has to be booted up into Target Disk Mode (TDM). So at some point later in the boot sequence, Windows would have determined the computer was an iMac instead of the MacBook Pro. I am connecting to an intel iMac, and the g4 has no OS installed on it (I am trying to install tiger using my dvd install dvd, the one with the black background and grey x which the G4 won't read). There is no solution to this problem, but even if there was, Window still would fail to boot. Hey guys, I just bought an 800 MHz iMac G4, and whenever I try to boot into target disk mode it shuts itself down. So you may see Windows start to boot but in the end Windows can not read additional files from the MacBook Pro.

The executing program from Microsoft now running on the iMac has no idea what Target disk mode is and no idea how to communicate with the MacBook Pro using the cable connecting the two computers together. Alternatively, you can boot to target disk mode by holding the T key during startup. This file is loaded into the memory on the iMac and executed. To enter Target Disk Mode on an Intel Mac, follow these steps: Boot to macOS Recovery. The iMac reads the necessary file from the hidden EFI partition on the MacBook Pro. The iMac recognizes the MacBook Pro as an external drive and determines the default operating system to boot is on this drive. Restart the target Mac and wait till Thunderbolt/FireWire logo appears on the screen. Click on the lock icon and enter the administrator password, then click Target Disk Mode.

At this point, the iMac is also running software (firmware) stored on the logic board. On the target Mac, do any one of the following as per feasibility to boot into Target Disk Mode: Turn on the target Mac, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Startup Disk. It only works for the next start-up, and cant be unset. At this point, the MacBook Pro is running software (firmware) stored on the logic board. That will set the machine to boot in target disk mode at its next start-up. The MacBook Pro is put in Target disk mode.
